South-facing is the reference point, not a requirement
A due-south roof at the right pitch generates the most from a given number of panels. East and west-facing roofs generate less in total but spread that generation earlier and later in the day, which can suit a household's actual usage pattern better than a single south-facing peak.
Pitch changes the answer for every orientation
The ideal pitch depends on latitude, and a roof that is too flat or too steep for its orientation loses output regardless of which direction it faces. Pitch and orientation have to be assessed together, not as separate factors.
A shaded south roof can lose to an unshaded east one
A single chimney, tree or neighbouring roofline shading part of an array for part of the day can cost more output than a modest orientation disadvantage. This is why the site assessment records shading across the full day and across the year, not just at the moment of the visit.
A split roof is often the better outcome
Where a property has roof faces in more than one direction, splitting the array across them, sized and wired appropriately, frequently produces a flatter, more useful generation curve than concentrating every panel on the single best-facing surface.
Orientation is one input among several
Roof orientation is the first thing most people ask about, and the one most often assessed on its own. In practice it is one of several factors that only make sense evaluated together, on the actual roof.
