An annual total hides the one number that matters

Two properties with identical annual consumption can need very different systems if one uses most of its electricity at midday and the other in the evening. Sizing against the annual figure alone tends to produce a system that is either oversized for self-consumption or undersized for the load.

Daily and seasonal shape drives the array size

Usage data broken down by time of day, and ideally by season, shows how much of a property's consumption solar generation can realistically cover, and where a battery or shifted usage would close the remaining gap.

Usable roof area is the ceiling, not the target

The maximum array a roof can physically hold is rarely the right size to install. A system sized to the load, within the roof's limits, generally makes better economic sense than one sized purely to the available surface.
